Save the date and start organizing your team for 2023’s Homer Steps Up! Community Walking Challenge!
Registration opens April 10th for the annual Homer Steps Up! four week long challenge from May 1 – May 28, 2023. Anyone can participate in this fun, healthy challenge by logging their steps using a wearable fitness tracker, smartphone, or even entering them manually! Team scores are a cumulative average of their members’ steps.

Teams of 5-25 members will compete for not only the challenge trophy and bragging rights. NEW THIS YEAR – Winning team gets to designate $500 to a local nonprofit/charity of their choice, and get custom WINNERS T-Shirts for everyone on the team! The next two “Runner Up” Teams will each be awarded $300 and $200 each to designate to the nonprofit or charity of their choice as well. More to come on this generous donation from Homer Foundation!
All individual participants reaching at least a weekly step average of 35,000 steps (that's only around 5,000 steps a day!) will be eligible for the weekly prize drawings, and the end of challenge cash prizes!
Three winners in three different steps categories (ranging from 5K a day average steppers to >20K a day average steppers) will win weekly prize drawings for Homer Bucks, AND three winners in each of the three categories will win the prize drawings for $100, $200, and $300 cash prizes at the end of the challenge!
658 participants on 60 teams walked a total of 168,440,076 steps from May 1 to 28. The winning team was Sweaty Bettys, who walked 4,822,522 steps between 9 members, resulting in a cumulative average score of 535,836. Team members included: Brooke Sanford, Devry Garity, Jen Liston, Juley Kalugin, Lila Johnson, Mary Liston, Melinda Erickson, Michelle Geagel and Theresa Halpin. The team was awarded the Homer Steps Traveling Trophy on Saturday, June 4 at the Awards Event at SPARC.

$1,800 in cash prizes were awarded at end of challenge by the South Peninsula Hospital Foundation. Additionally, weekly drawings for Homer Bucks were held based on weekly steps walked. The following businesses also offered Steps Deals to challenge participants: Homer Saw and Cycle, Homer’s Jeans, Cycle Logical, The Good Life Doggy Daycare, and Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.
